Dr. Janai R. Carr-Ascher
Sarcoma Medical Oncology & Translational Science

Dr. Carr-Ascher is committed to providing comprehensive and innovative care for her patients. She believes that compassion, honesty, and shared decision making are the cornerstones of medical practice. Dr. Carr-Ascher focuses on treating the whole patient while providing high quality evidence based care.
Dr. Carr-Ascher is a medical oncologist providing care for adults with cancer. She has an expertise and clinical focus on sarcomas, tumors of connective tissue.
Dr. Carr-Ascher's research focuses on understanding the biology of sarcoma with the goal of identifying new treatment options. She is working to characterize new ways of studying sarcoma development and metastasis.
Dr. Cyrus Bateni
Musculoskeletal Radiology & Sarcoma Imaging

Dr. Bateni's goal is to provide timely accurate care for each individual with the most appropriate imaging modality based upon their symptoms. He wants to do everything he can as a radiologist to make you feeling healthy and staying physically active.
Dr. Bateni is committed toward the education of fellows, residents, and medical students. He has an interest in image guided procedures.
Dr. Ryan Freshman
Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (Shoulder, Hip, Knee)

Dr. Freshman is committed to providing all of his patients with the highest level of care by utilizing state-of-the-art surgical and non-surgical treatments. His goal is to treat patients from all backgrounds in a compassionate and comprehensive manner. As a NorCal native who enjoys running, hiking, and cycling, he understands the importance of getting his patients back to doing the things that they love, whether that means competitive athletics or daily activities.
Dr. Freshman is a fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine surgeon who specializes in treating conditions of the shoulder, hip, and knee. He has clinical expertise in both arthroscopic (minimally invasive) and open procedures, with strong interests in knee ligament reconstruction, rotator cuff repair, shoulder replacement, and hip arthroscopy. Dr. Freshman has experience in treating elite athletes, having previously served as an assistant team physician for the USC Trojans and Los Angeles Kings.
Dr. Freshman has published on numerous topics in sports medicine relating to the shoulder, hip, and knee, and routinely presents his work at national research meetings. He has particular interests in shoulder replacement outcomes, postoperative pain control, and surgical innovation. Beyond his research, Dr. Freshman enjoys mentoring the next generation of medical students and residents.
Dr. R. Lor Randall
Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
Musculoskeletal Surgical Oncology

Dr. Randall’s clinical practice and research focus on musculoskeletal surgical oncology and on building-leading edge trans-disciplinary teams to combat rare cancers of connective tissue in children and adults.
Dr. Randall's translational research efforts have been recognized internationally, including his work as chief of the Sarcoma Array Research Consortium (SARC) lab, a laboratory investigating the molecular genetic mechanisms that give rise to sarcomas; his development of a genetically engineered mouse model at the University of Utah (in cooperation with Nobel Prize co-winner Mario Capecchi); and his technical advancements in limb salvage surgery.

As a director and producer, his work has earned multiple industry honors, including Davey Awards, Telly Awards, and Communicator Awards, reflecting excellence in storytelling, production, and digital communication. His projects span domestic and international initiatives and are recognized for elevating medical education through cinematic, data-driven narrative content that engages clinicians while maintaining scientific rigor.
Matt has led high-impact programs across the United States and globally, including work in Africa focused on capacity building and strengthening healthcare education and delivery systems. His research and innovative approaches to real-world evidence and outcomes have been recognized by the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research, where he has presented multiple posters across oncology and other therapeutic areas highlighting novel approaches to evidence generation, implementation, and impact.
He has collaborated with leading pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, and nonprofit organizations, including major healthcare systems, national networks, and oncology centers of excellence. His programs are designed to go beyond traditional education—linking evidence generation to measurable changes in clinical behavior, care pathways, and patient outcomes.
Matt has also received recognition from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for his contributions to national public health education and communication efforts.
He is actively building next-generation platforms that integrate data, technology, and intelligent systems to accelerate how evidence moves from discovery to decision-making—enabling more adaptive, insight-driven models of care that respond to real-world clinical needs.
